Strange Brews Edition 2 – Kopi Luwak

Strange Brews Edition Two – Some More S**t

In edition one we talked about the most expensive coffee in the world, Black Ivory Coffee. Now, it’s time to talk about the second most expensive (number two) coffee in the world, Kopi Luwak Coffee.

Who Does Number Two Work For?

Kopi luwak coffee is partially digested coffee cherries eaten by the Asian palm civet. The coffee comes out in clusters that look quite similar to a PayDay. But, instead of peanut butter and peanuts, it’s doodoo and coffee beans. The civet is a 7-pound, 2 foot-long, cute AF mammal. Think of a sugar glider, but without the gliding membrane and supersized. This coffee is mainly produced in Indonesia, but can also be found in the Philippines.

Civet Coffee Science

Believe it or not, there is a scientific reason this coffee exists. Thankfully, some poor soul did the R&D for us all earlier in the 19thcentury. I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to be the first person to eat coffee dung. There are two reasons this process creates a high-quality coffee. First, the civets are very picky and only eat the most ripe and flawless coffee cherries. Second, the civet’s digestive tract subjects the beans to acids, enzymes, and fermentation that alter the composition of the coffee.

Tough Crowd…

Has this strange brew peaked your interest? Speaking of peaks, anyone else peak in high school? While this coffee sells an interesting story and is a rare commodity, some “experts” aren’t convinced it is better than normal coffee. One American food critic said, and I quote, “It tasted just like…Folgers. Stale. Lifeless. Petrified dinosaur droppings steeped in bathtub water. I couldn’t finish it.” Anyone else think food critics are coffee experts? The only way to find the truth is to try it for yourself!

Cost / Price

How badly do you want this crap now? It’s not for the faint of heart or novice coffee drinker. At a whopping $35 – $100 per cup, or $100 – $600 per pound, this will make your local boutique coffee shop seem like a value menu. But you know what they say, save now for this s**t you want later in life. In the meantime, enjoy a reasonably priced Cold Brew Coffee or CBD Cold Brew that is 100% feces free!

Strange Conclusions

Clearly, this coffee sounds weird, exists for a reason, and is rare. But, if you are ever in Indonesia or the Philippines I highly recommend touring a free range farm. As a former patron of Segara Windhu Coffee Plantation, I can honestly say I’ve never been more weirded out and pleasantly surprised in my life. If you think NuRange Coffeeshould make a limited-edition Civet Cold Brew, send us a message. We love a good challenge.
